June 2008, Waterbury Exit 10, “Re-election Announcement”

I am excited to announce that I am seeking a third term as your State Representative. It has been an honor to represent our four great communities—Waterbury, Duxbury, Huntington and Buel’s Gore—over the past four years. I want to continue to be your voice in the State House, in order to help influence public policy, and to direct much needed services and resources to our district.

But there will be something different as I run this time: my teammate of four years, Robert Dostis, has decided to step down as State Representative and pursue other interests. I want to take this opportunity to share what it has been like to work with Robert and celebrate his accomplishments.

Our district has been so well-served by the hard work and dedication of Robert Dostis. While I feel sad to bid him farewell, I also feel grateful to have had the opportunity to work with him and learn from his leadership. Throughout our tenure together, Robert and I worked together very closely, whether responding to constituents’ concerns and needs – sometimes on a daily basis -- or meeting with state officials to move key projects in our district forward. Our teamwork has greatly benefited those we represent, and, if elected, I hope to be able to continue that strong working relationship with whomever fills Robert’s shoes.

We can all be proud of what Robert was able to accomplish for our district and for Vermont as our Representative. Robert’s capabilities as a leader quickly earned him the respect of his peers. He was a highly effective Chair of the Natural Resources and Energy committee, and became one of the key leaders in the State House that moved forward a critical policy agenda for Vermont’s energy future. Robert epitomizes the best of Vermont’s citizen legislators: he listens with an open mind, considers all sides of an issue, and reaches for consensus. I wish Robert the very best as he applies his talents and passions in new directions.

Looking forward, I am very concerned about the many challenges facing us all. Skyrocketing energy prices and a sagging economy top the list of Vermont (and global) challenges. Yet access to affordable housing and health care also remain a high priority. I have worked on these and many other issues as your Representative in the State House, and I hope to continue to apply my focus and energy on crafting solutions to our problems. As a state, we need to look to the future, capitalize on our assets and find the opportunities to adapt to a rapidly changing world. Now more than ever we need to bring down the barriers that divide us and work together to invest in a better tomorrow.

I look forward to seeing you around the district this summer and fall. As always, feel free to share your ideas and concerns with me.

Sincerely,

Rep. Sue Minter
