2008 Standout legislators

Minter was a woman on a mission this session. She wanted policy-makers to consider new options to finance critical road and bridge maintenance. The energetic lawmaker worked inside and outside the Statehouse to change minds about the possibility of bonding. She won approval for an analytical process to determine the feasibility of several bonding options so lawmakers will have recommendations next winter.

"While I'm glad the agency took the initiative to close the bridge to avoid any kind of possible tragedy, I think it's unacceptable the bridge failure was not foreseen and planned for," Minter said….

Coffee roasters brews expansion plans

"This is something I've been working very hard on to make sure Waterbury can accommodate their growth so they can stay and grow here," she said. "The challenge is urgent now that they need this change to grow."

"I'm thrilled at what's taking place today," Rep. Sue Minter, a Waterbury Democrat said. "The committee has been talking about this since summer. … And we have, until today, met with reluctance from the governor. … This week, the tables have turned."

While pleased by the bonding proposal, Minter said its impact must be tempered against the astronomical needs of transportation infrastructure in the state.

"It's a significant beginning," Minter said. "But we have a problem that is far greater than that."

"Our committee is very concerned about the state of the roads for the future," said Rep. Sue Minter, a Waterbury Democrat. "When we look to the future, we see that our roads are getting worse, not better."

"The cost of borrowing has rarely been cheaper," Minter said of 5.5-pecent interest rates on bonds.

"We believe this transportation crisis, coupled with the economic rationale for increased bonding, merits consideration and action," Minter said.

Waterbury group eyes improving downtown

Members of the Waterbury Downtown Partnership, Minter among them, met Wednesday with the municipality's planning commission to seek its approval for a plan that might eventually see Waterbury bond for [downtown] improvements itself instead of waiting for the state to find the money.

"The driving force for me is the economic development impact of delaying critical infrastructure in a downtown which is poised to grow but unfortunately is stymied," Minter said.
